LATELY

Life lately: a snuggly cat who soaks up all the "open door weather" he can get, early morning kayak trips through the channels on the Minneapolis city lakes, relaxing summer nights reading in bed (and a clean house- rare!), and of course a visit from Scruff McGruff on National Night Out- in which we crash our neighbor's block party every year because our block is boring.

Just some little snaps from every day life.

I'm currently plowing through some blogs looking for nuggets for Italy. Not that I've planned a ton of "big" trips in my day but it appears my preferred method of doing so is, Step 1: jot down the must-see-attractions (you know, Pike Place Market in Seattle... The Colosseum in Rome), Step 2: find some maybe lesser known but just as magical attractions (scored a tip on the "key of Malta" church in Rome from my aunt and the Boboli Gardens from a blogger living in Malta); Step 3: very specific recommendations for food and "local" type stuff (stumbled on a blog of a woman who lived in Florence and had tons of recommendations).

Other than that I have quite the depressing post in the queue about budgets and debt...sooo stay tuned for that!

PHOTO AN HOUR

This is another thing I've seen floating around on blogs that I always thought would be kind of fun to do- because if you're anything like me (read: nosy as hell) you wonder what it is people DO all day at their jobs.
Two problems arose with my attempts at the project: First, I never remembered or thought about it until like.. 2:00 p.m., or driving home from work. Derp, too late. Second, I don't think I realized until today how little that I can photograph during the day- not only from a "I sit at a desk all day, this is kind of dull" perspective but from a, "I have to make sure there is NOTHING in the photo that even hints at a client's case or client's name." (Whether or not you've realized I've tried to make a concerted effort to keep my job, however interesting it may be at times, OFF the blog. It's just too blurry a line, and I would never want my clients- or potential future employers- to see me writing about them).

Anyway, without further ado, here's my photo an hour project from 5.14.14:

7:00 AM // It finally occurs to me to start taking photos early enough to do this project. Yay! Today was a "gym day" so it began earlier than usual.

8:00 AM // Getting ready at the gym after my run.. which I actually enjoy immensely. I find it very therapeutic to be around a lot of other people getting ready as well.

9:00 AM // I've just gotten to work not too long ago, and settle in for the day. This means reviewing my "to do" list for the week, a fresh cup of coffee, and booting up the computer.

10:00 AM // One of the paralegals tells me that my boss wants to get one of our cases sued out today in Spokane County, Washington. Good thing the Summons and Complaint has been drafted for months! Pro Hac Vice papers (so I'm able to practice in Washington State) have to wait until we find out who defense counsel will be.. but those are ready as well.

11:00 AM // I finish drafting a Position Paper for our settlement ALJ (Administrative Law Judge) in another one of my cases. This is for a sort of mediation we will have in the coming weeks. It's very confidential though, so not even a snippit for you. ;-). [and no my signature is not just "Kelly B.".. all pertinent information was scrubbed there, as well, for the photo].

12:00 PM // Lunch of champions, le duh. I do some internet browsing during this time as well.

1:00 PM // I've earned a Special K bar dessert from the restaurant in the building.. riding down the elevator.

2:00 PM // Need to pull an expense report of all attorney's fees and costs to date for our mediation statement and realized I haven't entered time in this case since July 2013. CRAP. Spend the next hour doing this.

3:00 PM // Give statement to boss to review. He gets about 2 pages in and gives up, per usual, and begins suggesting changes that are actually on pages 3, 4, 5. Hand it off to another associate to do some real fine-tooth-combing it. Desk also begins to look like a disaster as the day goes on.

4:00 PM // But is it time to go home yet...?

5:00 PM // TIME TO GO HOME! YAY! Oh and some art that I haven't gotten around to hanging yet.

6:00 PM // Today after work I headed over to my dad's to wait for him to get off work- my dad, brother and I are taking my mom's mom out for a belated mother's day dinner. Hanging out with ma squish in the meantime.

7:00 PM // Sitting down for dinner at this hole-in-the-wall supper club out by grandma's. She's been going there for decades.

8:00 PM // Finally piling to the car after dinner.. in which my brother compared oysters to boogers and we all laughed hysterically for 10 minutes.

9:00 PM // home to put on sweat pants..TJ is extra meowy this evening so I check his auto feeder and it's empty. I THINK that means he's telling me he didn't get his dinner, but he could be lying. Settle on giving him 1/2 a dinner portion since he usually gets some treats before bed.

9:30- crawl in to bed to edit blogs, snoozing by 10.

That was a rather typical day-in-the-life!

LIFE LATELY

Hi, I'm here.
It seems like every weekend that passes, by the time I realize I haven't posted it's Monday or Tuesday, and then next thing I know it's Wednesday so I pretty much give up on that week and vow to try again next week. And on, and on, and on.

Here's a little bit of what I've been up to lately:

Lots of snuggling with my buddy:

Embarrassing my buddy by putting scarves on him and making him pose for pictures:

Last Friday, due to the fact that a large contingent of my co-workers live over an hour away from the office in Wisconsin, my boss let us work from home. It was a rare moment for me, who has never really been a "work from home-r".. but TJ really enjoyed having me around, and I enjoyed working from bed. M also worked from home.. so it was a nice start to the weekend.

That night I went and saw "Once" with M's mom, his step-sister, and his sister. I'm really not a musical person and find myself antsy for it to get over by about halfway through the second act, but I actually really enjoyed this one. It was more modern, with modern sounding music- and I liked it a lot. There's a movie "Once" - which I googled in the car on the way home- and while I'm intrigued, the actors in the movie look NOTHING like the play and I think I'll have a hard time with that so I may wait a bit until it's not so fresh in my memory.

We went to Crave beforehand in downtown Minneapolis, too. #nom:

Saturday I judged moot court at my law school with my #LSBFF (law school bestest friend forever-- long story, but I couldn't resist) and then we went antiquing at Hunt & Gather in Edina. I took a brief nap, and then M and I went to check out Yard House, a new restaurant near our place. It was SO. GOOD. The menu was huge, I had these orgasmic parmesean truffle fries, egg rolls, and M got a giant deconstructed spicy tuna roll (M and I shared the appetizers but the heaping mounds of avocado on the sushi prevented me from partaking..what with the allergy and the vomiting that takes place):

M had a client dinner Monday and I was the laziest sack of $hi* on the planet. Being too lazy to cook for one devolved into ordering delivery, which devolved into being too cheap to hit the delivery minimum and going to pick up Pizza Hut and then becausewhynot ..stopped for booze at the liquor store across the street from Pizza Hut. Total 100% #fattynight:

We've also been enjoying the warm weather (FINALLY) and cracking the windows. TJ has been able to expel some winter cabin fever by sniffing all the live long day. Meow:

So that's that. I swear I'm going to bring out my nice camera this weekend... I say that every weekend. So far we have a surprise birthday thing tomorrow, brunch with M's mom, dinner with my dad Saturday, lunch with a friend Sunday, and watching the Masters on Sunday with  M's sister and her bf. I need to squeeze in some time to pick up decor for the bridal shower I'm throwing next weekend. All good stuff, and I'm looking forward to the weekend!

Girls night and a fireball

This is a short story of how a seemingly innocent girls night can go terribly wrong in a matter of minutes.

Intrigued? Good. Stick around, and you'll find out what I'm talking about. ;-)

Friday night I had some girls over for dinner and drinks, as I mentioned previously. Ever since I gave TJ a taste of the great outdoors (via leash and collar) he sits at the back door looking pitiful when people are on the deck.

Exhibit A:
The girls, minus Leah, on the deck. From L-R, Molly, Sarah, and Laura. I've known Molly since middle school. She's also a bridesmaid. Sarah and Laura were college friends of Molly that I've since gotten to know, and love :)
This girl never says no to cheese.
And a tasty little treat I call the "French Kiss" (equal parts chardonnay and Simply Lemonade brand Raspberry Lemonade. I've never tried it with another type of lemonade and I don't care to.. the Simply Lemonade stuff is just SO GOOD.
The girls got a sweet action shot of me prying the cork out with my teeth. Yes, that's an electric wine opener next to me on the table, and no, apparently I don't quite know how to use it.
Lemon cream pasta with asparagus. nom nom nom. Similar recipe (with brussel sprouts) HERE.
For the asparagus, I just blanched it (boiled it for 2 minutes, shocked it with cold water), and then diced it up into 1/3's, and sauteed it in olive oil with salt, pepper, red onions, and garlic. Lil' bit-o-basil and parmesean cheese on top.
The remainder of the evening was relatively unassuming. We sat on the deck drinking, chatting, laughing. M came home from happy hour and joined the convo. We moved things inside when the bugs got bad, and continued the drinking, chatting and laughing.

Then it started to rain. Nothing TOO bad, but heavy rain, and a "threat" of a potentially big thunderstorm. There was some thunder and lightning but again, nothing to seek shelter over.

M started to fall asleep sitting up, so he dragged himself upstairs around 10:45.

It was a little after 11 when there was a flash and a crack and then black. Power was out. I think I exclaimed something along the lines of "fuckkkkkkk." I just get annoyed with power outages. You don't realize how much you rely on power until you try to do little things and realize- oh wait, that too requires electricity. I stumble into the kitchen to get the lighter and start lighting candles in the living room. We're giggling because we're buzzed and it's kind of silly at this point. Then M comes RUNNING downstairs screaming "THE NEIGHBORS' HOUSE IS ON FIRE!" We run to the backdoor, look down the alley, and all you can see is this huge, intense, orange glow. The unmistakable flickering orange glow of flames.

For about 5 seconds it was one of those "OMG this is happening. This is real. I actually have to call 911" moments.

So 2 of us grab our phones and call 911... it's raining hard so we still can't really see what's on fire. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we get through... the dispatcher picks up and the first thing she says is:

"are you calling about the fire on _____ Avenue?"

"uh, yes."

"yep, we got it."

click.

Sooooo we turns out the fire dept was on it! a minute later the sky goes from orange to black. Then we hear the sirens and see the lights. The truck stops at our end of the alley and for a second we're confused. It quickly becomes clear they were blocking off both ends of the alley, and then walking towards the scene. 2 firemen walk by, as all of us our standing on the deck in the rain. M, in what I didn't think was the best decision of the night, decided to put on a poncho and go walk down the alley. He ended up chatting with a fire fighter and found out what happened. Lightning struck a tree, which caused a branch to fall on the transformer in the alley, which promptly exploded into flames. Thank god it wasn't anybody's house. They cut power to the wires which killed the fire for the most part, but the fire was still smoldering/flaring up a bit.. so they stuck around to douse it. There was a live wire down in the alley though, so they taped it off for the rest of the night. We went to bed, hoping to wake up to power. Alas, no such luck.

We hopped on the internet and learned it'd likely be out until 11 p.m. or at least that was their forecast at the time. So, we packed a bag, packed up our food that may spoil, and crashed M's mom's house. I had bought a bunch of brunch food dead set on having a lovely little Saturday morning with M.. since I had been absent studying. So I still made us breakfast, just at his mom's. :)
Her spaceship stove. That I love.
We lounged, I napped, and then we got ready to go to my cousin Mitch's 2nd birthday party. He loved his Elmo cake his mom made him. That's his brother Max in the green.

M and I got into the party spirit. Actually, some little boy was running around making everybody take, and put on, a birthday hat.
And then M was naughty and had to eat his Elmo cake in the corner.
And thus concludes girls night gone wrong, a fireball, and an Elmo birthday party.

M and I have ZERO plans tomorrow. I'm quite looking forward to it. Actually, he looked at the weather (I call him Dave Dahl - local meteorologist- for a reason...) and it's supposed to be 78 and sunny. No more deathly hot temps! (I know people live in states where it's regularly 90+ degrees and I honestly don't know how. It's been in the 90s and humid for WEEKS/over a month here and it makes me want to die.) So, we're thinking of putzing over to Wayzata and Lake Minnetonka, where his dinner boat cruise was, for a nice little afternoon out there.

Unrelated. Are people not supposed to post on weekends? I feel like I should be scheduling posts for weekday mornings. Is that what people do? I just draft them when I can, and then post it right away. I guess I don't care at this point what my stats are or which day the fall on. I barely look at them to begin with. I figure people will read it when they open up their google reader anywhoo. Whatevs.

Hope everybody's having a fantastic weekend! and HAPPY WEDDING DAY to Syndal! Can't wait to see photossss!!

My "old" man

Yesterday, the 13th, was M's 28th birthday. One thing I told myself is that I would not 100% lose myself in bar studying to the detriment of those around me... in some instances. One of those, was M's birthday. His actual birthday weekend is being spent at his friend's bachelor party at a cabin, which is just as well since I've been holed up in the library for 10 hours a day the last 2 days. Woof.

Tuesday, I made reservations for a surprise birthday night. I gave him a hint Wednesday, and then got lost getting there twice and eventually half panicked told him, although as soon as we pulled up near the docks at Lake Minnetonka I think he had a good idea ;-).

I took him on a Hawaiian themed dinner cruise on Lake Minnetonka.
For those not familiar with MN, Lake Minnetonka is a BIG deal. Quite literally, it's huge. There is over 140 miles of shoreline, and it spans 9+ cities. BIG. I'm also fairly certain there's not a single home that fronts the lake that's worth any less than $1 million.
 (our centerpieces :) )
Some random fun facts I learned of people who have lived/live on the lake: The dude who invented breathe right nose strips, a 27 year old freak who made his money on the stock exchange, Tom Petters (I believe it was the 2nd, but one of the largest ponzi scheme perpetrators next to Bernie Madolf... the legal nerd in me is all too familiar with him as our firm handled some collateral cases dealing with that mess), and the Mann Theater family. There were others, but my brain is mushy.
(Wayzata Bay, where the boat launched from)
Thursday nights are the "sailing regatta" nights on the lake... fancy!
 The birthdayyy boy!
Loons- our state bird. **I was corrected by M.. these are geese. Blame the bar exam. Also, I'm not an ornothologist, or whateverthehellitis that knows about birds**
The weather was looking rough on the drive out there, and the entire cruise the starboard side (left side? port side? who the fuck knows) was dark and overcast. Our side was sunny and beautiful. The skies cleared in time for a gorgeous sunset
It was nice to take a break from the books to join the real world... partake in fun activities.. sometimes I forget it's summer and normal people are out doing fun things at night/on the weekends.
Dearest M:
Who knows when you'll get around to stalking this post out (although I know you'll get to it eventually.. ;-) )... I know I've been miserable and irritable and absent the last, oh, 2 months.. but despite that, I want to say thank you. Thank you for being there, for supporting me unconditionally, and for telling me "you're going to pass!" even though I may hate it, but because I know you really believe it. You have the utmost faith in me, and it helps. It does. When I have my meltdowns about failing (3, to date people...) even if you're not here you text me to tell me you love me, or rub my back when you are there. More than that, I know failing isn't the absolute end of the world, (somewhere, deeeeeeeep deeeeep down I know this), because I still have a FANTASTIC fiance, and a wonderful life we've made together. I know that you'd love me even if I did wind up being a waitress with a J.D. ;-)

Real talk? Ah mees you. I hope you're having fun at Zach's, but 10 hours at the library is so much more bearable when I have a cute kitteh AND a cute boy to come home to.

Update on my sanity

Well.. It's Monday and I survived the weekend with the 2 terrors. I went to watch my friend run the Minneapolis half marathon Sunday morning, stopped for a solo lunch at Noodles and wrote out my grocery list (they're across the parking lot from one another). Upon my return around noon, I decided to partake in an experiment. I let Lucky out of his room, only this time, after freaking out that they were trying to kill each other and not playing at all, I let them go at it. For HOURS. TJ took great pleasure in stalking Lucky, jumping on his back, and nipping his neck/ears. Joke is on TJ though because Lucky is twice his size and when Lucky ACTUALLY had enough, he'd let TJ know.

After about 5 or 6 hours of that, they seemed to reach an understanding. They could be in the same room without wanting to fight/play, and even co-existed peacefully on occasion! Behold, progress:

TJ even calmed down enough to enjoy one of his favorite weekend activities: sitting in the nook of my arm while I use the computer, read, or in this case.. work on flashcards for barbri.
He's so freaking adorable. I think Lucky was hiding downstairs. I think TJ forgot for a little while Lucky was even there.. or maybe he really is just relaxing to the idea.

such a sweetie..
Mutually distracting activities, such as swinging at bugs through the screen of an open window, also serves as a good "babysitter" for these 2.

All in all, I think we're going to survive, guys.

I do sincerely hope that when I go home after work to feed them one hasn't killed the other one. That'd be bad.
